Biography

Born in Bolton, schooled in Lytham St Annes, BSc and PhD gained at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, employed at University of Nottingham for 40 years, now retired from full-time employment at the University. Director of Platelet Solutions, Ltd, a spinout company of the University of Nottingham.

Expertise Summary

For many years I was engaged in research to identify how blood cells, especially platelets, are involved in the control of bleeding (haemostasis) and in forming blood clots which result in heart attacks, strokes and similar negative outcomes (thrombosis). The research involves finding means through which thrombosis can be avoided. I am a director of a University of Nottingham spin-out company Platelet Solutions Ltd which produces products for use in platelet function testing.

Teaching Summary

After many years of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates at the University of Nottingham I now do less of this. I still deliver the odd lecture when invited to do so.

Research Summary

Selected Publications

Life is about doing the best you can within the environment that you find yourself in. It is also about being compassionate and caring and encouraging others. If we all did that the world would be a better place.

Current Research

My main interest is in the contribution of blood cells, especially platelets, to haemostasis and thrombosis, and the development and testing of appropriate pharmacological or dietary interventions. Investigations of platelet function are performed using a wide range of experimental approaches. There is a particular interest in development of tests of platelet function that are easy to use and therefore are available for widespread use in healthcare. A spin-out company Platelet Solutions Ltd has been formed to facilitate this.

Past Research

My past research is best appreciated through a glance at my publications.

Future Research

Although I am now retired from full-time academic work I do continue to maintain an interest in current developments and still contribute ideas to ongoing research at the University of Nottingham. Also I continue to be a director of the spin-out company Platelet Solutions Ltd.
