MA in Medieval Studies

This taught interdisciplinary postgraduate programme offers students the very rare opportunity of putting together their own tailor-made programme of modules offered by History, English, Art History, French, Classics, Archaeology, Music and Continuing Education: the schools and departments that comprise the Institute for Medieval Research at Nottingham.

Under the guidance of experts in a wide variety of medieval subjects, students will explore the connections and contrasts between the various disciplines, the sources they employ, and the intellectual issues relevant to medieval studies. As such, this programme maximises student choice in terms of subject matter whilst offering guidance in how to relate the different forms of evidence to each other.

The MA in Medieval Studies offers unparalleled opportunities to all those interested in the study of the medieval world.

Course Structure

The MA (180 credits) consists of:

  • TWO DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC CORE MODULES (30 credits)
  • OPTIONAL MODULES (90 credits)
  • A DISSERTATION (60 credits) of 15-20,000-words

For students attaining AHRC funding and wishing to go on to PhD work, 15 of the taught credits are taken in generic research skills in the University's Graduate School.

The MA involves 12 months of full-time study (24 months part-time). Applicants will normally be required to have a good 2:1 undergraduate degree or international equivalent. Applications are welcome from both mature and international students. Those whose first language is not English must also achieve an overall score on the British Council IELTS test (Academic) of at least 6.5; or a TOEFL score of 600 with a TWE of 4.0 on the paper-based test or 250 on the computer test.

Resources

Nottingham has a vibrant research culture in Medieval Studies and students are part of a lively international community of researchers centred upon the Institute for Medieval Research. They attend seminars organised by the Institute, which cover all areas of medieval research. Students are encouraged to participate in the active postgraduate community at Nottingham, which includes postgraduate seminars and social events.

There are extensive library and other learning/research facilities in the Hallward Library on the University Park campus. For example, the library holds a large collection of Old Norse-Icelandic language and literature. The special Eirikur Benedikz Collection of Icelandic literature is held at the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections on the King’s Meadow Campus. Manuscripts and Special Collections also houses major collections of medieval manuscripts comprising estate and other records of notable East Midland families. This important resource offers postgraduate students with interests in English and History considerable potential for further research.
