Welcome to the MSc in Molecular Genetics and Diagnostics

Whilst the genomes of the human and that of several pathogens may have been completely sequenced, there is still a vast amount of information that remains to be deciphered to understand their workings. It is now clear that many diseases are influenced by human and microbial genetics, and technological advances in biomolecular sciences are having a significant impact on molecular diagnostics.

This course seeks to provide students with detailed knowledge of the genetics involved in pathogenicity, from the regulation of microbial virulence determinants to the mutations arising within humans, as well as explaining the current methodologies used in both diagnostic services and research. Practical skills in molecular techniques will also be developed during the course. By the time students have completed the MSc, they will also have developed vital transferable skills such as time management and organisation, verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to critically analyse information.
