About the Department of Music

The Department of Music, part of the University's exciting Lakeside Arts Centre, is committed to offering a high standard of teaching within a research-led university.

Music courses at Nottingham

Our courses cover a wide range of topics, including all periods of western classical music, jazz, popular music, film music, composition, and performance. Teaching takes the form of lectures, seminar classes, and individual consultative tutorials.

Our courses develop key critical and analytical skills in the study of music as a vibrant form of social and cultural practice, and offer the opportunity to focus on specific topics within the subject, for example: performance, historical musicology, analysis and composition.

Facilities

We are situated in attractive, purpose-designed buildings, built in the 1990s, next to the South entrance to University park Campus. The Department has several seminar rooms and a large lecture theatre on site – all equipped with audio-visual facilities, as well as a recording studio linked to the Djanogly Recital Hall. Furthermore, our facilities include:

  • teaching rooms and common rooms,
  • numerous practice rooms,
  • a Music Library and video archive,
  • a new rehearsal hall,
  • the Djanogly Recital Hall,
  • computer Labs and a fully-equipped Music studio.
