New-look music curriculum for 2015

The Department of Music has comprehensively refreshed its undergraduate curriculum for 2015, providing exciting new options in ensemble performance, music technology and music therapy.

Our recent appointments of Simon Paterson, Teaching Associate in Music Technology, and Dr Xenia Pestova, Director of Performance, have allowed us to programme several new modules, including: Advanced Ensemble Performance, involving coaching of small student ensembles; Collaborative Project, involving collaboration of student performers, composers and music technologists on a new creative project; and Music Production, involving advanced skills in sound recording and studio practice. Additionally, from 2016 we will be running Approaches to Music Therapy, in response to keen student interest in this field of work.

By planning our curriculum across two years (2015/16 and 2016/17), we are able to expand student choice by running some modules in alternate years, making them available at both levels 2 and 3 so that all students have a chance to take them. Performance, composition and music technology modules continue to be offered every year, creating strong optional pathways throughout the course. Additionally, our revised first year curriculum strengthens the core knowledge of all students in key areas of musical repertoire and global music studies.
