Royal Musical Association, 42nd Annual Conference
The 42nd Annual Conference of the Royal Musical Association was hosted by the Music Department at the University of Nottingham on 11-14 July 2006. The conference took place slightly earlier in the year than usual, so as to fall during the summer conference season.
Summary
The conference was held at Hugh Stewart Hall, the oldest and most historic hall of residence on the University of Nottingham's Highfields campus, and at the Department of Music. Residential accommodation was located at Hugh Stewart Hall.
Rosemary Dooley's bookstall was open during the conference.
The conference theme was Music and Visual Cultures.
Music has always enjoyed a close relationship with visual modes of representation. The conference theme embraced many areas of the discipline, including history, aesthetics, analysis, composition, performance, and ethnomusicology.
The programme included the annual Peter le Huray Memorial Lecture, delivered by the conference keynote speaker Prof. Annette Richards (Cornell University), whose work on C.P.E. Bach and the picturesque in late eighteenth-century music has been widely acclaimed.

Conference Concert
The conference included a recital by leading young fortepianist Sharona Joshua on the evening of Wednesday 12 July. Joshua is particularly well known for her interpretations of late eighteenth-century keyboard music, and her programme complemented Prof. Richards' keynote lecture.
