A new campaign to encourage students to embrace a healthier lifestyle has launched at The University of Nottingham.

HealthyU brings together all the services the University offers relating to health and wellbeing. All the relevant services are featured — from the Cripps Health Centre and the Department of Recreation and Sport to the University Counselling Service and the Financial Support team.

The HealthyU website is also home to a nutritious menu devised by Nottingham’s Michelin Star chef, Sat Bains. Designed to suit a student cooking on a budget, the recipes include pumpkin soup; spaghetti with rocket, pines nuts and lemon; and apple crumble.

The HealthyU campaign aims to get people to be more proactive about their health. It suggests challenges and changes that individuals could introduce to lead a fitter lifestyle. Ditching fizzy drinks for fruit smoothies, jogging round the campus grounds and using a smoking cost calculator to work out how much you’d save if you quit are among the suggestions on the website — www.nottingham.ac.uk/healthyU

The site also brings together access to the University’s health services — from sexual health and drink and drugs advice to information on exercise and mental health.

“We wanted to ask students ‘who’s in charge’ when it comes to the physical and mental wellbeing,” said Robin Dollery, Head of Student Services. “It’s about being proactive and making decisions that will improve your lifestyle. If you’re in charge you can make sensible decisions about your life, whether that’s what you eat, when you exercise, how your relationship progresses and how you drink.

“These resources are relevant to both staff and students. Work can be a cause of stress, just like studying. If you feel like it’s getting on top of you, help is at hand.”

The campaign was launched yesterday on University Park, and included free aerobics and swimming sessions at the University’s Sports Centre. Students were also offered free health checks by the Sports Centre and the Cripps Health Centre. Nottingham City NHS teams gave advice on hygiene and nutrition — from highlighting handwashing using UV light to showing exactly how much fat is in different kinds of foods. More than a thousand students attended the event.

HealthyU information is now available across the University. HealthyU information boards will be regularly updated and available in all libraries, and relevant events will be posted on these and on the website.
