Hydrogen is widely promoted as a sustainable fuel for the future. It is packed with energy and – unlike fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel and coal – does not emit greenhouse gases as waste, producing only water as a by-product. However, one major challenge is how to store and carry sufficient amounts for use in vehicles.

At the first of the final two expert-led events hosted by The University of Nottingham at Shanghai Expo 2010, some of the leading researchers from the UK and China (now the world’s number-one investor in renewable energy technologies) will meet to review the very latest developments in hydrogen fuel storage.

The one-day workshop, Alternative Energy: Hydrogen Storage, on Wednesday 20 October will enable chemistry researchers and nanotechnologists to present latest developments in the field to delegates in the London ZEDPavilion at Shanghai Expo and assess whether hydrogen is truly the fuel of the future.

Event organiser Professor Neil Champness, Chair of Chemical Nanoscience in the School of Chemistry at The University of Nottingham, said: “One of the major challenges facing the global community is finding alternatives to fossil fuels, tackling climate change and pollution. One possibility is the use of hydrogen as a fuel which produces only water as a by-product when used to produce electricity.

“Storing hydrogen is critical to bringing hydrogen to the wider marketplace. This event at Expo 2010 is a great opportunity for leading experts from the UK and China to discuss how to resolve this problem.”

Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Engineering Chris Rudd, who leads The University of Nottingham’s six-month presence at Shanghai World Expo, is responsible for technology transfer at the University. He sees great global potential for Nottingham’s developments in this high priority research area. “The world’s transport infrastructures need new vehicles capable of utilising fuels which power effectively but pollute less.

“This is just the latest event to showcase our expertise in this area. Others have addressed sustainable development in China, green manufacturing, global food security, and low-carbon planning and building. Through our unique presence at Shanghai Expo 2010, this University is building far-sighted collaborations with Chinese researchers and industrial partners that share our commitment to managing climate change.”

Nanoscientist Prof Champness, specialises in molecular organization, including surface supramolecular assembly and organization in the solid-state via crystal engineering. He will be joined by Prof Robert Mokaya, Professor of Materials Chemistry, and Prof Martin Schroder, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at The University of Nottingham, who will present on hydrogen storage in templated and activated carbons, modulation and control of hydrogen storage by metal organic framework (MOF) polymers.

Prof Shilun Qiu, Professor Of Chemistry at Jilin University, will talk about synthesis and hydrogen storage of metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) crystalline materials; Prof XH Bu from Nankai University, will discuss porous coordination polymers for gas storage; Prof Huai Sun from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, on designing new materials for hydrogen storage from first principles; and Prof Jie-Peng Zhang, from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, on optimising sorption performance in a special/normal way.

The event on Wednesday 20th October 2010 runs from 10:30–17:00. More information can be found here: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/shanghaiexpo2010/Events/BookingForm/alternativeenergy.aspx

All events take place in The Auditorium at London ZEDpavilion. The building is an example of urban best practice, designed and built by leading green architects ZEDfactory. It was chosen after winning the international design competition in this category.

Throughout October, the final month of Shanghai Expo 2010, top researchers from the University’s campuses in the UK and Asia, as well as leading colleagues from other institutions, will host just two more thought-provoking workshops, lectures and conferences. These span Nottingham’s extensive research in sustainability:
