A pioneering UK university which has won awards for its campuses in Asia in the past decade will run a course this November sharing best practice with other universities developing and operating campuses abroad.

The University of Nottingham’s 140 acre campus at Ningbo in China will host an intensive one-week programme designed for senior managers and university leaders from higher education institutions worldwide from Monday 8 to Friday 12 November 2010.

Confirmed speakers include Martin Wolf, Associate Editor and Chief Economics Commentator at the Financial Times; William Archer, Director, International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate); Professor Craig Mahoney, CEO of the UK’s Higher Education Academy; Phil Baty, Deputy Editor, Times Higher Education; and Patrick Freeland-Small, Chief Marketing Officer at the University of Melbourne.

Both Nottingham’s Chancellor, Chinese Academician Professor Yang Fujia, and the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Greenaway, will also take part in a selection of keynote plenary and workshop sessions which will run daily, interspersed with other activities. On the Thursday, delegates will visit a Chinese university, Zhejiang University in Hangzhou.

The University of Nottingham is a global university with campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. Its Registrar, Dr Paul Greatrix, said: “This new programme builds on Nottingham’s strengths as a successful research-led UK university with an excellent reputation for international leadership and management.

“Nottingham established its campus in Malaysia 10 years ago and won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2001 for that initiative. We won another Queen’s Award in 2006 to mark our distinction as the first foreign university in the world to receive a license to open a campus in China.

“The programme, designed and delivered by professional managers responsible for planning and running Nottingham’s campuses in Asia with additional contributions from other international experts in HE, builds on our leading reputation in global higher education.”

The University of Nottingham represents a new model of global higher education. The Times said Nottingham is “the nearest Britain has to a truly global university”. Students and staff are offered study and travel opportunities to help position them for success, and Nottingham conducts coordinated research on some of the most pressing global human concerns and social problems simultaneously in three different but complementary national contexts.

During the week-long programme a selection of the following subjects and issues will be covered in lecture, workshop and seminar sessions:

• developing university strategy
• leadership in an international context
• commercialising research
• assessing quality, rating and rankings
• developing international partnership
• managing global governance
• marketing on a global stage
• effective financial management
• development and fundraising
• different approaches to internationalisation.

The University’s links with China date back many years, featuring well over 90 collaborations with Chinese universities. In 1999 the University elected academician Professor Yang Fujia as its Chancellor. With the then Vice-Chancellor, Sir Colin Campbell, they developed a vision for a new hybrid style of university in China.

In July 2003, new legislation in China was passed permitting the establishment of foreign campuses in China. The University of Nottingham was the first foreign university to receive a licence to operate a campus under this legislation. The result was the opening in 2004 of a campus in the prosperous and successful city of Ningbo in Zhejiang Province. The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus now has over 4,000 students.

In 1950, the first group of Malaysian students arrived in Nottingham, beginning a 60-year association with the University which has seen Nottingham graduates such as YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, become leading members of society.

In 2000, The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) first opened its doors to just 90 students in Kuala Lumpur . Since then, our student body in Malaysia has grown to over 3,500 — including more than 70 nationalities — based at our 125-acre dedicated campus site in Semenyih. It celebrates its tenth anniversary later this month.
