Industrialisation and modernisation continue to have a profound impact on the way we live and on the environment which surrounds us. Next week, in China, at Shanghai Expo 2010, leading Nottingham academics will discuss the implications of rapid changes in our social, economic and natural environment and how it affects people.

The mechanisation, modernisation and urbanisation of human societies have led to ‘rapid social change’, a thought defined by Dr Peter Lyth, a Teaching Fellow in Tourism at Nottingham University Business School, as: “The often difficult process by which people adapt to social, economic and technological novelty.”

Shanghai, the home of the Expo, saw its population rise by over two million between 2000 and 2008. With rural to urban migration a large contributing factor as nearly a million long-term migrants arrived during the same period; a statistic that betrays a central shift in social class and structure.

This complex relationship between nature and culture has caused fundamental changes and is still transforming burgeoning societies — 93 per cent of urban growth is attributed to developing nations.

Dr May Tan-Mullins, a lecturer in Environmental Politics at The University of Nottingham’s Ningbo campus said: “The only constant in today’s world is change. Rapid and unplanned development will inevitably result in social tensions and environmental degradation. These are the two most important issues in current China.”

Awareness of this dynamic acutely affects the way in which civic authorities and government institutions plan for the future, both on a global and a national scale, to sustain the precarious balance between the society and nature.

Five University of Nottingham academics from several schools and faculties in the UK and the University’s campuses in Asia will lead a round table symposium which aims to explore means to respond to the global challenges of diminishing space, environmental pollution, the search for energy resources and the collective management of common goods.

One of the contributors to the event, Dr Peter Lyth, said: “The session will address the social and particularly the environmental challenges of global development and industrialisation, taking international tourism, the quintessential global industry, as a case study.

本次活动的演讲人之一彼得•莱思博士说:“本次会议将应对全球发展和工业化所带来的社会挑战和环境挑战(尤其是后者),以国际旅游业这一最典型的全球行业为例进行个案研究;

“It also evaluates the promise of sustainability, both as an idea and as a practical means of securing the future of the tourism industry.”

Other keynote speakers include Dr Robert Lambert, a Lecturer in Tourism and the Environment at The University of Nottingham, who will explore the history of the idea of sustainability and how this sheds lights on the complex and changing relationship between nature and people over time.

其他主旨演讲人有英国诺丁汉大学旅游业与环境讲师罗伯特•兰伯特(Robert Lambert)博士,他将探索可持续性想法的历史以及可持续性怎样阐明长期以来自然与人类之间复杂并且不断变化的关系;

Professor Matthew Humphrey, a Reader in Political Philosophy at The University of Nottingham, is to examine the problems of democratic governance when it comes to asking citizens to change their lives for future generations.

英国诺丁汉大学政治哲学准教授马修•亨弗瑞(Matthew Humphrey)教授将考察在要求公民为后代改变生活时所出现的民主治理问题;

Dr May Tan-Mullins intends to display, with the example of fishing communities in the South China Sea, how questions of economic development, better living, and environmental intervention are intertwined.

The opening address at the symposium will be delivered by Dr Catherine Goetze, Head of International Studies at The University of Nottingham’s Ningbo Campus.

Though rapid social change may sound like a purely theoretical concept, Dr Tan-Mullins warns of the very real negative consequences. “Non traditional security threats, such as environmental and livelihood insecurity, are pertinent issues in today’s world.

“Without good governance and adequate planning for sustainable development, we will only encounter more conflicts in the next decade.”

The University of Nottingham’s exhibition and series of expert-led events is running from May until the end of October in the London ZEDpavilion, part of the Zero Carbon Living Space zone at Shanghai Expo 2010.
