The Chief Executive Officer of Siemens UK has officially opened Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST).
NUAST, which is sponsored by The University of Nottingham and the Djanogly Learning Trust, offers students aged 14 to 19 an education specialising in science, engineering and computing. The new facility was officially opened by Professor Juergen Maier on 23 April.
The academy is located in a recently completed state-of-the-art building close to the University and the Queen’s Medical Centre. The Torch Academy Trust is the academy’s educational partner.
Innovative work
During the launch event the attendees heard speeches from Mr John Saunders (Chair of the Board), Professor Sir David Greenaway (Vice-Chancellor of the University), Mr John Tomasevic (CEO of the Torch Academy Gateway Trust) and Professor Maier.
They were also given tours of the impressive new building and had the opportunity to meet students who have been working on projects related to Siemens. Professor Maier also addressed the whole school assembly and guests.
Juergen Maier, Chief Executive of Siemens UK, said:“NUAST will play a vital role in inspiring generations of local children to learn about science and engineering and pursue the answers to the big challenges facing us in the 21st century. Touring the school it’s clear that it has some of finest science and engineering facilities of any school in the country, but what impressed me most was how much passion and enthusiasm radiates from the pupils – something that will, I hope, stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
NUAST has close links with local employers such as Siemens, Toshiba, SMS, Experian, Rolls-Royce and many others. These companies help to tailor the NUAST curriculum to help meet the needs of the local economy. The University also supports NUAST students through its access to world-leading educational resources, especially in the specialist STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
World-leading players in technology
Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor at the University said: “NUAST is a fantastic addition to Nottingham city as it will provide a host of different opportunities for young people that have not been previously available. By working with partners such as Siemens, they will be able to expand on their knowledge in key areas and will be able to learn from world-leading players in the technology industry.”
Mr Harkireet Sohel, Principal of NUAST said: “The official opening of NUAST is a very exciting day for everyone who has been involved in the project. For the students and staff it is an opportunity to highlight the exciting and innovative engineering, coding and science work that goes on here every day. For the sponsors it is confirmation that their vision of a technical college for the young people of Nottingham was not only inspired but timely. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many NUAST supporters on this very exciting day”.
