Biography

I commenced by nurse education in Birmingham at the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing where I was awarded the silver medal for achievements in both the academic and practice components of the course.

My clinical work focused on accident and emergency, trauma and critical care and I was both a night sister ward sister at the General Hospital in Birmingham.

I completed my Certificate in education as a full time student and then commenced as a nurse teacher at the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing focusing on pre-registration nursing for approximately one year. I was then successful in obtaining a joint appointment where my focus in practice as to act as a nursing officer and support newly appointed ward leaders. Alongside this role I also developed a newly registered nurse development course which facilitated transition to being a qualified nurse before the days of preceptorship.

A geographical move took me to Derby School of Nursing in the late 1980's where I initially worked with pre-registration students before developing an ENB Return to Nursing course and involvement in other ENB developments.

On integration into the University of Nottingham I was responsible for a number of post-registration module development and delivery and obtained the post of BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice course Leader and then Learning Beyond Registration Courses Director in 2002.

In 2007 I was appointed as Centre lead for the Derby Centre which involved the leadership and co-ordination of approximately 40 academic staff in the delivery of the Diploma/BSc Nursing and the Post-Graduate Diploma for graduate entry students utilising a problem-based learning curriculum.

In 2009 I was appointed Lead for a project funded by the Aga Khan Foundation to support faculty development in Andhra Pradesh in India as one means of enhancing quality nursing care delivery. This project has now ended and evaluated well and I am now involved in similar work funded by DFID in Orissa India.

In January 2011 I was appointed to the role of the Head of Division of nursing.
