Research Summary

  • Supporting Functional Numeracy skills for clinical practice
  • Nurse Education -
  • TRaNSforM - Training requirements and nursing skills for mobility

  • Leonardo Partnership Project 2010 -2012

    Summary

This project aims to address the need to establish deep learning, skills and understanding around the impact of a mobile and global health community, for nursing and healthcare personnel.

Currently, new students in nursing are able to access an increasing array of opportunities within basic curricular which enable them to appreciate international mobility and health. In increasing number of cases they can also participate in international or cultural exchange. However, enlargement of these opportunities is comparatively recent and for many existing nurses the opportunity to develop basic and essential knowledge and skills was limited in their pre-registration education.

This is recognised in existing literature and attempts have been made to develop healthcare staff using tailored study days and international modules. However these have met with limited success, due to heavy workloads and staff failing to prioritise International issues as an prime concern within the many competing skills required in their nursing care.

The TRaNSforM project seeks to work with partners in practice, and universities as well as work based learning students undertaking post registration modules, to develop a skills escalator framework which can be used to enable learners and module developers to assess skills and learning requirements both personally and within existing courses.

The project has two key elements - The process of the development of the escalator framework - which should offer opportunities to staff and students and partners in sharing with other countries in the partnership and enhancing their own learning.

The outcome development of a cross national framework which can be used and transferred across settings.
