Biography

An experienced midwife, midwifery lecturer and external examiner, Jayne has been instrumental in implementing the three year Pre-registration Diploma / Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Midwifery programmes at the University of Nottingham from its infancy. She is currently the Director for Learning Beyond Registration and Postgraduate studies in Midwifery and the Course Director for the BSc (Hons) in Midwifery Studies Pathway and the Postgraduate Diploma / Master of Science in Midwifery. Jayne has a particular interest in the complexities surrounding professional issues, law and ethics relating to midwifery practice and as well as facilitating modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, has written a number of publications in this area.

In 2005, Jayne's first midwifery text book: Decision Making in Midwifery Practice that she co-edited with two of her colleagues in Nottingham, was published by Elsevier. A year later this text was published in Japanese having attracted interest at an international level. In 2010, Jayne co-edited a further text with Elsevier: Advancing Skills in Midwifery Practice that has been very well received by the midwifery profession and other health professionals working in maternity care. She has also contributed a number of chapters to an additional text in the Ten Teachers series published by Hodder Arnold: Midwifery by Ten Teachers. Jayne and two colleagues have recently collaborated with midwifery and obstetric colleagues to produce a Midwifery Case Studies text for students and practitioners for the Open University Press Case Book Series. This text, Midwifery Practice: Critical Illness, Complications and Emergencies Case Book: is due to be published in the spring of 2012. Jayne's next editing project will be the 16th edition of Myles Textbook for Midwives (the best selling midwifery text world -wide) with her colleague, Maureen Raynor.

Jayne secured a funding scholarship from the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting to undertake a Master of Arts degree in Policy, Organisation and Change in Professional Care at Loughborough University. For her dissertation, she undertook her first major piece of research which involved evaluating the shared learning experiences of Pre-registration Diploma in Midwifery and Nursing students. The findings of this study helped to inform future teaching within the pre-registration curricula. In 2005, Jayne completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham by undertaking an extensive research study examining informed consent during the intrapartum period through ethnographic participant observation. This study was supported from monies obtained from the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting and The Hospitals Savings Association in conjunction with the Royal College of Midwives.

As part of the BSc (Hons) in Midwifery Studies Pathway, Jayne has developed an innovative work-based learning module in which midwives undertake project work to enhance maternity / neonatal care provision. Jayne was successful in her bid to secure £4,200 from the University's Centre for Integrative Learning to undertake an in-depth evaluation of the effects this type of study has on student learning and practice development. The findings of the study was presented at the 29th Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in Durban, South Africa in June 2011.

In addition to being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the Doctoral Midwives Research Society and DePartu: History of Midwifery Research Group, Jayne has been a member of the Royal College of Midwives since 1981 and sits on their national Ethics Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the ICM Research Standing Committee, the ICM Research Advisory Network and the ICM Midwifery Education Network . Jayne is a peer reviewer for the ICM Triennial Congresses and regularly undertakes peer reviews for the international journal: Midwifery. More recently Jayne has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Childbirth, which was adopted by the ICM as its official journal in June 2011 at the ICM Congress in Durban and has been invited as a guest peer reviewer for a midwifery education special edition of Nurse Education in Practice.
