Ray Wainwright (full time student)

Thesis title 'The impact of phenomena diagnosed as mental illness upon sense of personal identity." Aim: To explore the experiences of people who have been given a diagnosis of mental illness in terms of their lives, their relationships and their personal identity. Method: A narrative study involving in-depth and repeated interviews with six purposively selected individuals. Matthew Kiernon (part time student, Head of Mental Health Nursing in the Armed Forces) Thesis title: "Organisational Identity, Transition and Dissonance in British Army Infantry Recruits: The Recruit Journey" Aim: To explore the role that antecedent personal, social and demographic factors play in a British Army's recruit's ability to complete basic training, to investigate the possibility of identifying those at risk of being unable to cope with the transition to life in the British Army, and to explore the reasons given by recruits who fail to complete basic training. Methods: Follow up study of 1,000 consecutive recruits to the army collecting standardised biographical data; monitoring weekly during training, and interviewing all those who failed to complete training. Findings from both the quantitative and qualitative analysis were integrated to determine whether prediction of failure was practicable and to develop an increased understanding of the impact that antecedent factors and training experiences contributed to training failure. Jane McKuen: (part time student, Head of Service User Involvement, Sheffield Partnership Trust) Thesis title: "The Use of Life Story Work with People who have a Diagnosis of Dementia to Enhance Person-centred Care" Aim: To explores the experience of using a life story work approach with people with dementia and 'challenging behaviour'. In particular, the ways in which life story work Is understood and developed in practice, Interrogates the context of care, is experienced by all participants, and effects the delivery and outcomes of care Method: A participatory constructivist approach within multiple case studies.

Past Research

Over the past 10 years I have held joint academic/service posts which have enabled me to place an emphasis on the implementation of research findings through further research, service development, workforce development and training. I have co-developed a toolkit for training mental health workers in Recovery principles and approach including a personal recovery planning pack for service users.
