Biography
Professor Karen Cox is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Infrastructure, Environment and Information Services. A Professor of Cancer and Palliative Care and a Registered Nurse, she is a former Head of the School of Nursing at the University of Nottingham. Karen's academic and research interests include information provision, decision-making and quality of life in relation to cancer treatment trials and palliative care. Her research investigates the experiences of patients and their families and examines how they deal with a cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Her work has been funded by Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, ESRC and the NHS. She studied at King's College London, Oxford Brookes and the University of Nottingham, and has been a Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin and Yale University.

Current Research
Karen's research expertise lies primarily in qualitative work, as well as the use of mixed methods, to study patient experiences of health and health care. The main focus of this work has been patients' and families' experiences of cancer clinical trial involvement, examining issues around recruitment, informed consent, quality of life, and end of life issues. She has been involved in a range of projects from nurse-managed follow-up after treatment for cancer to evaluations of palliative care service initiatives. She maintains a regular output of publications in international and national journals and has a track record of project funding from a range of organisations including Cancer Research UK, ESRC, Macmillan Cancer Support, CancerBACUP and NHSTrusts.
