Biography

I entered the NHS in 1982 as a Student Nurse with Derby School of Nursing. After qualification I worked as a staff Nurse in Derby until I commenced my midwifery training in October 1986 with the North Hertfordshire School of Midwifery.

I qualified as a midwife in May 1988 and stayed at the Lister Hospital Stevenage until June 1989.

I then moved to Sheffield and worked at the Northern General Hospital as a Staff Midwife. In April 1990 I obtained my first post as a Midwifery Sister (F Grade) which then was a real achievement at 23 months post qualification. During my time as a junior Sister I worked full time predominantly in the Labour Ward environment and also studied part time to achieve my Diploma in Midwifery and ENB 997.

In 1993 I commenced the part time BA (Honours) in Nursing and Midwifery Studies and at the same time took up a full time G Grade Community Midwifery post.

In 1997 I commenced the Post Graduate Diploma in Health Care Education and changed my practice role. I returned to hospital practice as a G grade Midwifery Sister on 2 days per week to allow a secondment to the University of Sheffield as a lecturer practitioner for the remaining 3 days per week.

In 1997 I obtained a fully time Midwifery Teachers post with the University of Nottingham based at the Mansfield Education Centre. Completing the Post Graduate Diploma in Health Care Education in 1998 and registering with the NMC as a fully qualified Lecturer. In 2000 I completed my MSc in Health Care Education.

My teaching role is varied and has allowed further professional development. In 2006 I became the Acting Director of Pre Registration Midwifery Education to cover sickness for 6 months and then spent the following 27 months as the Assistant Director of Pre Registration Midwifery Education.

I currently lead the Practice theme of the midwifery programmes with a special interest in reflective practice. I am also a member of the Complications and Normality module clusters.

I have strong links with clinical practice and have developed the first Midwifery Practice Learning Team and Interprofessional Practice Learning Team within the University. Also being the only centre to have an established programme of local interprofessional learning activities (case note Analysis sessions) with Medical Students and Student Midwives.
