Lecturer Adult Health / Critical Care, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences
My clinical background is based mainly within critical care and acute care nursing and I have held a number of posts in teaching hospitals and district general hospital settings. I qualified in 1986 and my first post was on a general surgical ward. Following this I moved into intensive/coronary care nursing and undertook the ENB 100 Adult Intensive Care Nursing Course in 1990 at Dudley Road Hospital Birmingham. I progressed up the career hierarchy to be come a Senior Sister in ICU at East Surrey Hospital Redhill and then took a joint post as Practice Development Facilitator for Critical Care for Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust/The NHS Modernisation Agency and The University of Surrey. The latter post included helping to establish a Critical Care Outreach Service and developing critical care education programmes within intensive care and for other departments/wards. I was also a clinical supervisor and a teacher for the ENB 100 equivalent course at the University of Surrey. I was an active member of the South Thames Critical Care Network and worked on many strategies, policies, procedures and programmes related to critical care and education. I completed a BSc( Hons) Biological Science and Health Care Studies and went on to complete a Masters In Clinical Studies and Education. I completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Education and gained NMC recognition as a Lecturer/Practice Educator in 2000. I was appointed to the University of Nottingham as a Lecturer in Adult Health in September 2002 and held the Cross School Convenor Role for the Pre-registration Nursing Critical Care Module for 5 years.
My main areas of expertise are within the critical care field and I have a particular interest in the development of acute assessment skills for nurses and other health care professionals. Portfolio development is also an area of expertise and I am a module leader for both Portfolio 1 and 2 modules in the Diploma/BSc in Nursing Course. I hold an honorary clinical contract with United Lincolnshire NHS Trust and also practice regularly within critical care at North Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust. I am an external advisor in critical care for several higher education institutions and am also a facilitator for several certified emergency care courses.
