Biography
On gaining the Diploma in Nursing, Peter commenced the one-year Orthopaedic Nursing Course at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). On completion of the course, he took up a charge nurse post at the orthopaedic trauma unit in Northwick Park Hospital. In 1984, he moved to a post in the Nurse Education Department at RNOH to teach on the post registration orthopaedic nursing courses. During the late 1980s, Peter held posts in pre- and post registration nursing education with a continued remit for orthopaedic nurse education. Senior posts within Bloomsbury College and South Bank University involved developing and implementing new curricula at pre and post registration levels. In 1994 his first book, as editor and contributor, was published; 'Nursing the Orthopaedic Patient'.
He was Founding Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Nursing and is now Emeritus Editor of the International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing. His present position is as an Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham having held the post of deputy director when developing the current pre-registration programme and assisting in setting up the orthopaedic nursing pathway. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has conferred him in 2000 with the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to orthopaedic nursing.
