SONET community blog

The SONET blog is written by the current SONET organiser, Fred Riley, but any member of staff can post to it by joining the SONET communityon the University's Community@Nottingham social networking site which is open to all UoN staff.

Joining the community

To post to the SONET blog, you need to join the SONET community:

  1. go to community@nottingham and log in with your usual UoN network credentials
  2. after logging in, go to http://webapps.nottingham.ac.uk/elgg/sonet/
  3. on the right you should see a link labelled "Click here to join this community", so click it
  4. after confirming that you want to join, you should be taken to a page listing the communities you're a part of, which should include SONET

Posting to the blog

  1. Click on "community blog" under "Blog" on the right hand side.
  2. Click on "Post a new entry" at the top.
  3. Get writing!
  4. As an optional extra, and to help others find your bons mots, you can tag your posts with keywords.
  5. Set the post viewing restriction option you want. being
  6. Click on Save Post.
  7. You can also edit your own posts, and comment on other posts.

Blog topics

At this stage, the primary topic of the blog is the same as that of SONET as a whole, namely e-learning and healthcare. Posts about, say, nice e-learning resources, websites and tools are welcome; posts that might stimulate discussion, for instance about e-learning pedagogy, are even more welcome; posts about your pet cat will be off-topic, unless your cat has something to say about e-learning.

Keeping tabs on the blog

If you want to be notified by email when a new entry or comment has been posted:

  1. click on Account Settings at the top of your page
  2. set Receive email notifications to Yes
  3. press Save at the bottom of the page

You can also keep tabs on blog activity by subscribing to the RSS feed, either by clicking on the RSS icon to the right of "Community blog", or by entering the RSS URL directly into your newsreader. If you don't know RSS from a hole in the ground, see a RSS FAQ on this site.
