The Sutton Trust Summer School 2016

The University of Nottingham Sutton Trust Summer School offers students the opportunity to explore the university experience in depth, whilst developing the skills and knowledge required to progress to the country’s top universities. Participants enjoy a varied programme of activities – academic, social and personal development – on the residential summer school, which will provide a fun and valuable insight into student life. For 2016, students should apply online for one of the following streams (click on the subjects below to see required A-levels):

3rd-8th July 2016

  • Biological Sciences: Exploring the Living World 
  • Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy
  • Geography (including Physical and Human Geography)
  • Historical Studies (includes History, Art History, Classics and Archaeology)
  • Law, Politics and International Relations
  • Psychology and Philosophy


17th-22nd July 2016

  • Engineering, Maths and Computer Science
  • Cultures and Languages (includes Film, American Studies and Modern Languages/Cultures)
  • Medicine and Medical Sciences
  • Sociology, Theology and Ethics
  • Veterinary Medicine and the Science of Animals 


  • Biological Sciences- taking Biology and one other science at A-Level
  • Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy- taking Chemistry and Physics at A-Level
  • Engineering, Maths and Computer Science- taking at least one science subject and/or Maths at A-Level
  • Cultures and Languages- no language experience required
  • Geography- taking Geography at A-level
  • Medicine and Medical Sciences- taking Biology and Chemistry at A-Level
  • Veterinary Medicine and the Science of Animals- taking Biology and Chemistry at A-level




The 2016 Sutton Trust Summer Schools are open to students (home UK only) currently studying in Year 12 or S5 in Scotland (or equivalent) at maintained schools or colleges in the UK. Priority will be given to students who meet all or most of the following criteria:

  • will be the first generation in their family to attend university or who have been eligible for free school meals
  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE, 5 credit passes at Standard Grade or equivalent
  • are taking relevant subjects in relation to the subject stream they are applying for
  • attend schools or colleges with a low overall A-level, Higher/Advanced Higher (or equivalent) point score and / or schools or colleges with low progression to higher education
  • come from neighbourhoods with low overall progression rates to higher education or high levels of socio economic deprivation
  • are (or have been) looked after, accommodated or in care
  • are under the age of 18 at the time of the summer school
