Operations Management
Welcome to the Operations Management Division within Nottingham University Business school. Operations Management is a key field of study, vital to efficient and effective business in both services and manufacturing (including public-sector activities). Our approaches to Operations Management (OM) are wide ranging and include behavioural and human factors methods, modelling and simulation, and analytical techniques of Operations Research. Our academic staff provide expertise in operations strategy, new product development, readiness assessment for collaborative design. Logistics and supply chain management, mass customization, planning and control, outsourcing logistics and supply chains, quality, modelling and simulation, technology and knowledge management. We also have strong links with the University's Engineering Faculty, with whom we run joint courses and research programmes.
Why does OM matter? In a highly competitive and dynamic global economy, businesses are facing new and demanding challenges. For producers of goods (products) and services it is the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations that can achieve competitive advantage, leading to opportunities for business growth and development. Best practice for designing, planning, controlling and improving operations, logistics and supply chain management processes, and new technologies to support them are continually evolving. The challenge for operations managers is to embrace these changes creatively and effectively. Similar pressures exist alike in both profit and non-profit making organisations, where customer and stakeholder expectations on profit, efficiency and service are constantly increasing.
Operations Management is the function that addresses these issues. It is the driving force for the development of operations strategy; innovation and implementation of initiatives in the organisation and its processes; as well as ensuring the effective day-to-day running of operations. This field requires knowledgeable and innovative individuals to manage operations to ensure success.
