A warm welcome from the School of Nursing genetics website. This site is intended to be used by all healthcare professionals and specifically nurses, midwives and health visitors practitioners, teachers of nursing, and students. It has been designed to provide various links which, we feel is relevant, appropriate and user friendly. In terms of depth of the material, it is hoped that each individual will be able to determine their own level of knowledge as guided by their study or practice.

For our students on the existing Diploma in Nursing course and post registration courses, we have specified the content and learning outcomes for the various modules.

To keep the website “live”, we intend to provide the latest news in the world of genetics i.e new advances in genetic research, new discoveries in relation to genetic disorders, minutes of meetings, conferences etc.

Hope that you would find the website interesting. Any comments about the website, please send via the suggestion box.

How to use the website if you are a practitioner ?

If you are a practitioner, please click on the "Health Professionals" links, and you can then click on any of the topics that you want to read or study.

If for example, you wanted to look up a particular genetic disorder, you can click on Clinical Genetics and genetic disorders. This will bring you to several links such as:

Chromosome abnormalities
Genetic mutations
Genetic map and linkage
Genetics and cancer
A-Z of genetic disorders and other links
Treatment possibilities

How to use the website if you are a student ?

Click on the "Student" links and navigate to the course you are studying. For example if you are studying DN4, the biological science module in the Common Foundation Programme, click on guidelines which appears in the last paragraph on “How to use the website to maximise your learning”. This will guide you to several links. You can of course, choose any other links that you find interesting.

For other modules. Please click on the required topics.

Happy reading/study.

Tony Farine
