How to use this Pack

This material is designed to update your skills as a mentor in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for annual updating (NMC 2008). You must be a mentor, have had previous mentor preparation and be recognised on the local mentor register before completing this. This material is for existing mentors only and cannot be used as a method of mentor preparation.

Throughout the pack, there are activities that are designed to link from your practice as a mentor to new changes and information arising from NMC requirements and new standards. You may feel that it will be beneficial to discuss some of the information with your colleagues to gain a broader outlook and we would strongly encourage you to do this. Sharing your learning will help you to remember what you learnt and also ensure that your team of mentors are working together with consistent expectations for students in your placement area, which in turn will increase the reliability of your assessment decisions.

At the end of the workbook online is an assessment using multiple choice questions. On successful completion of the questions your mentor register entry will be updated as evidence of fulfilling the NMC requirements. The NMC require a "live" register of mentors to be maintained and this data is held by local practice learning units or lead staff at each NHS Trust.
