Triennial Review

As part of the NMC 2008 Standards, your employer will begin triennial reviews of all mentors, every 3 years, to ensure mentors identified on the "live register" of mentors have updated and met the requirements to mentor. This includes having mentored at least 2 students over the last 3 years. Mentors should not normally be expected to mentor more than 3 students at one time (NMC 2008).

Many Trusts have now developed their own triennial review documentation for you to complete in preparation for your Triennial Review. Some Trusts will only allow the use of their documentation so check within your Trust regarding this. If you are not able to access your Trust document, the Division of Nursing has also produced a Triennial Review Document (PDF) to help you to demonstrate to your manager that you have maintained the requirements of mentoring. You will need to have recorded the dates and details of the method of update on the record and this should reflect the information on the mentor register, where your record is amended each time you update. Your Triennial Review document can be completed and produced at your review with your manager.

You do not need to keep details of the student's records or evidence of their mentoring but should be able to tell your manager who you have been mentoring and details of the experiences you had with them. You should have been involved in mentoring these students but may not always have been involved in signing off their assessment documents for example if you had been their associate mentor.

Mentors should not keep copies of the student records for the purpose of triennial review. There may however be other evidence which you have produced for your professional portfolio and KSF evidence that supports this, for example any thank you cards received from students or your own reflection on mentoring a student in practice. These records can be shared with your manager if you wish.
