RLO: Structure of the Atom

Structure

One way to help us understand the structure of the atom is to use an analogy. Each atom appears like a minute solar system with a dense central area known as the nucleus, that is a bit like the sun and small particles, known as electrons orbiting this nucleus, a bit like planets orbiting the sun. The nucleus itself is composed of two types of particles known as protons and neutrons.

Note:
The planetary model is a simplified representation of the atom.
