Integrated e-learning for developing core conceptualisation skills in the engineering sciences (INECSES) Tom Cross (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering). The School of EEE, a vanguard school in E-learning, have conceived an integrated e-learning strategy to help undergraduates with the difficult abstract material found in many engineering sciences. Increasing numbers and widening access mean Universities face the problem of reduced levels of mathematical and abstract experience in their undergraduate intake. We must meet this challenge if we are to maintain the high technical standards required of graduate engineers. The initial two-year phase focuses on visually dynamic e-material for difficult spatio-temporal concepts in areas such as electromagnetism, AC electricity, circuits and control. The methodology emphasises integration: in lectures, in problem classes and, via the web, in self-study wherein bulletin board structures allow students to help each other. Our planned outcome is nothing less than a step increase in value added education, encouraging students to follow technical career paths with a new confidence and to maintain the highest standards in an age of widening access. |
