Research overview

Masters by Research (MRes) programmes allow students to undertake a substantial amount of independent research while gaining 20 credits of transferable skills training. The programmes are flexible in nature and allow students to take some additional accredited taught credits, in consultation with their supervisor.

The MRes Molecular Evolution involves the study of the evolutionary relationships among organisms and gene families using molecular methods, with evolutionary trees (phylogenies) generated from the analysis of DNA and protein sequences. 

The programme involves both laboratory work (DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing) and bioinformatics (DNA sequence alignment and phylogeny reconstruction). 

Research projects are available in:

  • the evolutionary relationships in the molluscs (in particular, the land snails) and the link between molluscan phylogenies and biogeography
  • the molecular taxonomy of spiders and the link between rates of molecular and morphological diversification
  • studies on the evolution of spider silk gene families and the relationship between silk diversification and speciation
  • studies on the phylogeny of the foraminifera and the distribution of different genetic types across the oceans
 

Facilities

We have excellent facilities for genomics and post genomics including bioinformatics, imaging, micro-arrays, model organisms (amphibians, arachnids, bacteria, crustaceans, fish, flies, mammals, worms and yeast) mouse and zebrafish transgenics, proteomics and sequencing.
 

Research support

Funding

UK/EU students

UK/European research postgraduates are funded by BBSRC, MRC, NERC, EPSRC, the European Union, The Lawes Trust and The University of Nottingham Scholarship Funds. The University Graduate School operates two schemes of its own to help support current postgraduate research. The Graduate School Travel Prize and Universitas21 funding. For prospective students the University has introduced a new funding database. The Graduate School also holds a list of other sources of funding. Studentship opportunities are also available. 

International and EU students

Average starting salary and career progression

 

In 2016, 92.6% of postgraduates from the school who were available for employment had secured work or further study within six months of graduation. The average starting salary was £26,847 with the highest being £70,000.*
