Biological response to manmade materials is strongly influenced by surface chemistry. Obtaining the desired biological response in the fields of drug delivery, tissue engineering and biomaterials in general, therefore requires control of the surface of materials. The LBSA puts considerable effort into developing methods of engineering surface chemistry, which requires both appropriate chemical modification strategies and importantly surface analysis of elemental, functional and molecular structure of the top few nanometres. This work can be split into two strands:
