Biography

I trained as an industrial pharmacist, was one of the first critical care specialist pharmacists in the UK, and gained a Department of Health funded PhD in health economics with Prof Martin Buxton (Health Economics Research Group, Brunel University). I have been in my current position since May 2007. Prior to this I was based at the School of Pharmacy, University of Manchester (1996 to 2007). In 2004, I won a Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellowship to Harvard Medical School working with Prof Stephen Soumerai. Since 2006, I have been a member of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Appraisal Committee, and a member of the Health Services Research Network (HSRN) Executive Board.

I co-ordinate the Health Economics At Nottingham (HER@N) group, which brings together and supports an expanding community of health economists within the University. I also co-ordinate the recently formed Pharmacy Economics Group, within DSRMH.

Selected Publications

I am very familiar with communicating both health economics and clinical subjects to individuals or groups with little or no background in the area, using a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment methods. Twelve years experience of teaching health economics to undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacists and clinicians led to the writing of a textbook in health economics, which is now used as a recommended text in many British Schools of Pharmacy and was highly commended by Prof Alan Maynard.

Current Research

My research focus is the application of applied health economics and economic evaluation to medicines policy, prescribing and consumption. Specific themes are medicines adherence and safety and quality of medicines use. Key current projects in these themes include:

I use clinical trials, complex intervention cluster trials, observational data collection, systematic review and meta-analysis, quantitative handling of cost, cost effectiveness and net benefit data (principally non-parametric bootstrapping, regression and simulation techniques, probabilistic and Bayesian economic analysis techniques). My current expanding area of research is the use of administrative datasets to examine the economic impact of medicines related health policy, prescribing guidelines quality and patient medicines adherence, with four doctorate students working in this area. My Nottingham collaborations in this area include Prof Tony Avery and Dr Casey Quinn (Division of Primary Care), Dr Murray Smith (School of Pharmacy) and Dr Laila Tata (Epidemiology and Public Health).
