Study abroad: experience the world and gain valuable life skills

Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity to learn about new cultures, gain invaluable life experience and enhance your CV. We encourage you to study abroad for part of your degree - opportunities range from summer schools to a full semester abroad.

I was inaugurated into an entirely new university experience and exposed to a mind-expandingly diverse approach to philosophy. I was also able to establish a network of connections with students and professors from across the globe, which remains strong to this day.

University-wide programme

The University-wide programme is a competitive scheme for full-time undergraduate students.

It offers you opportunity to study at one of our partner universities as part of their degree programme.

You will be supported through the process of application by a designated member of academic staff within the department. We have an excellent success rate, with 100% of applicants in 2014 gaining a place to study abroad for a semester.

I left Nottingham in February 2013, shedding my winter coat and boots in exchange for shorts and flip-flops, and an endlessly sunny semester at Australian National University in Canberra (ranked well within the top 10 in the world for philosophy and a home to outstanding philosophers past and present), and what can only be described as a metamorphic experience.

Nothing could have prepared me for the five months I was there. I arrived with the inevitable apprehensions, turbulences and only the most playful of xenophobic tendencies, but I soon adapted and grew to love my new environment and the warmth of its culture. On my return, I'd be lying if I said I didn’t feel pangs of loss for my semester abroad, but the memories, people, and insights remain and I could not recommend the university exchange programme more highly.

Summer schools

The University of Nottingham's overseas campuses in China and Malaysia offer two week summer schools on a variety of subjects.

Taking part in an overseas summer school can be a great way of making the most of your summer break by exploring a different culture and gaining new skills. As these programmes are offered during holiday periods, credits and grades are not transferred back to Nottingham and you can study whatever interests you.

If you wish to be considered for one of the Hamill scholarships then you must submit an initial application through the UK International Office.
