Visit our School

We organize a range of visits for groups from Brownies to sixth-formers. These visits are tailored to the interests of the group, but might typically involve:

  • Observational astronomy visit to the telescope. This is an evening event. Total time is 2 hours for a max of 30 students, 1 hour for 15 students. After a brief introduction and safety talk they will be split into three groups, each group to be hosted by one of the team leaders. A postgraduate helper will oversee movement between the three areas which are:
    • Building the Solar system
    • The spectrum
    • The telescope
  • 1.5 hour visit to the Nottingham Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre. This comprises:
    • A 45 minute lecture (with demonstrations). Schools can choose from a number of talks including "Nanotechnology: The Next Industrial Revolution?" and "Patterns in Time and Space: From Nano to Nirvana". Each talk can be tailored to the requirements of the school.
    • A tour of the Nanotechnology Centre including visits to the scanning probe microscopy laboratories, the transmission electron microscopy suite, and the Nanoscale Spectroscopy facility.
    • The opportunity to use - under supervision - an atomic force microscope or scanning tunnelling microscope to image nanoscale structures. (depending on size of group, but will assist an experienced postdoc or PhD student to modify scan parameters such as scan size, scan rate, rotation etc.

If you would like to bring a party around, please contact the Outreach Coordinator, who will work with you to put together a suitable itinerary to meet the interests of your group.
