I teach vector calculus and fluid mechanics to our second year physics students as part of the module F32CO4 Classical Fields. I also developed module F31COM 'Computing for Physical Sciences' to teach Matlab computing to first year Physics students.

Current Research

My recent research relates to the fullerene molecule C60. Fullerenes are closed cage-like structures of carbon atoms that exhibit a range of interesting physical properties. For example, solids formed from fullerene molecules and alkali atoms can be superconducting or they can be insulating. I am particularly interested in the role played by the coupling between vibrations of the fullerene cages and the motion of the electrons around the cage in determining the observed physical properties. I am also interested in more theoretical aspects of electron-vibrational (vibronic) coupling in what is known as the Jahn-Teller effect. Recent work involves simulating scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images of the C60 molecule and its ions on surface substrates.
