The group is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham, England. Also involved in astronomical research at the University are the Astronomy and Astrophysical Chemistry Group and the Particle Theory Group.

Our research interests span the range of extragalactic astrophysics from detailed analyses of individual galaxies to the overall structure of the Universe; this work combines observational studies of astronomical objects with detailed theoretical modelling.

We recently hosted the following conference:

We are involved in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), and lead the deepest component of this project, the Ultra Deep Survey.

We are the sole UK members in the international consortium behind the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph.

The group hosts a copy of the main database for the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and includes leading members of the 2dFGRS team.

The group has an expertise in hydro - dynamical modelling and is a member of the Virgo Consortium for cosmological simulations.

We are involved in the
ESO Distant Cluster Survey.

We are also leading the STAGES survey, using the Hubble Space Telescope to study galaxies and dark matter in the Abell 901 supercluster.

We are one of the nodes of the EU Research and Training Network Multi-wavelength Analysis of Galaxy Populations.

We are a leading institute in the Herschel ATLAS - the widest area survey to be performed by the Herschel Space Observatory.

The group is host to the UK mirror of the NASA Astrophysics Data System.
