MA in International Security and Terrorism

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

This exciting programme introduces students to issues in international security as well as the specialised field of terrorism. The programme investigates international security and terrorism since the ending of the Cold War, whilst making clear how the issues raised are embedded within the broader field of international relations.

The course emphasises three elements: the theoretical underpinnings of the study of international security and terrorism, the main empirical problems of security and terrorism in the present age, and the opportunity to undertake a research dissertation under the guidance of specialists in the field.

Students taking this programme have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Brussels and The Hague, where they visit key diplomatic institutions and organisations such as the European Commission, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), and the European Parliament.

Students are also invited to attend a series of talks given by distinguished practitioners from outside academia, which provide an opportunity for interaction with key figures from the world of politics and international relations. In addition practitioners from the military and government are brought to Nottingham to speak to students.

The programme equips students for careers in policy research, the armed forces, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). It also provides an excellent foundation for further studies at doctoral level.
