MA in Politics and Contemporary History


1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The MA in Politics and Contemporary History focuses on events since 1900, reflecting the upsurge in of interest in contemporary history following the end of the Cold War and the attendant opening of much of the hidden history of the 20th century. The course will address contending approaches to recent events which have shaped students' own lives, and the lives to those around them.

The University enjoys one of the highest concentrations of research expertise in contemporary history in the UK. Students taking this course benefit from the expertise of staff and scholars in the School of History, as well as other schools and departments within the University, for example the Department of American and Canadian Studies, the Department of Theology, and the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies.

Areas of special interest include:

  • twentieth century international history
  • modern french imperial history
  • the history of modern warfare
  • intelligence and national security
  • religion and conflict in the Middle East
  • twentieth century Chinese history
  • contemporary British political history
  • modern German history, including the Holocaust

The course equips students for careers in a wide range of areas including national government, international organisations, the media, and teaching. It also provides an excellent foundation for further studies at doctoral level: several of the course's alumni have pursued careers in academia and hold positions in some of the most prestigious universities in the country.

Students are also invited to attend a series of talks given by distinguished practitioners from outside academia, which provide an opportunity for interaction with key figures from the world of politics and international relations.
