MA in Politics (Research Track)

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The MA in Politics (Research Track) is an ESRC recognised programme that has been established to meet the demand from applicants of exceptional quality for a programme which will prepare them for advanced research in politics.

Studying with scholars working at the forefront of politics and international relations research, in an environment with a unique breadth and depth of academic expertise, students develop a thorough understanding of their subject. They also receive an excellent grounding in the research methods necessary for the study of politics at an advanced level and acquire a range of transferable skills, useful after completion of the course.

By the end of the programme, students will have:

  • an appreciation of the history of the discipline as well as an understanding of the main theories and concepts employed in political science, including rational choice theory, institutionalism, neo- Marxism, and normative theory
  • research, communication, and personal development skills as well as political data analysis and professional academic report writing skills
  • a critical understanding of the methodological and ethical issues involved in undertaking research in political science, and be competent in using techniques such as interviewing, documentary analysis, observation, and ethnography.

Students are also invited to attend a series of talks given by distinguished practitioners from outside academia, which provide an opportunity for interaction with key figures from the world of politics and international relations.
