MA in War and Contemporary Conflict

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

This programme introduces the student to the study of contemporary conflict. Taught by a variety of experts, the MA in War and Contemporary Conflict seeks to cover many of the aspects of this important field of study. It is taught within one of the leading research and teaching Schools in the UK.

Armed forces and the security agencies of states find themselves faced with a complex spectrum of conflict. This spectrum covers conflict prevention and management, at one end, through peace-making and peace-enforcement, to counter-insurgency and war-fighting at the other. Military operations often occur within a highly charged political and media environment and draw in a variety of actors such as international organisations and non-governmental agencies. The MA in War and Contemporary Conflict aims to help the student understand the range of conflict scenarios and the confusing context in which it takes place.

Core modules in this new MA include: Contemporary Warfare, The Law of War and Peace and Strategic Thought. Students can take modules in Security Studies, Counter-terrorism and Airpower as well as many others. Students also research a detailed dissertation on a subject of their choice under the expert direction of experienced staff.

Participants in this programme have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Brussels and The Hague where they visit key diplomatic organisations such as NATO Headquarters, the European Commission and Europol.

Distinguished practitioners in the field of security and politics are invited to speak at Nottingham. This enables students on the MA to hear from leading authorities in the field in order to assist them in forming their own views on contemporary issues.

This MA equips students for a variety of careers. These include the armed forces and the security services, local and national government, journalism, teaching and international organisations. It also provides an excellent foundation for further studies at doctoral level.
