The School is committed to recruiting the most able students, regardless of social or ethnic background, age or disability, and is taking a full and active part in the University of Nottingham’s Widening Participation scheme to facilitate applications from the widest range of students possible.
Applications are considered solely on merit and academic potential. All applications for undergraduate degrees are made through the Universities and Colleges Application Scheme (UCAS).
We do not normally interview applicants. The selection process is normally based entirely on the UCAS application form – so it is important that this is completed correctly and fully.
The standard A level requirements for each of our degrees are listed below:
We welcome applications from outside the UK, including those who do not have A levels. The University’s International Office will be able to offer advice about accommodation, fees and issues relating to stay in the UK – and give advice on the grades required for international students. If you have not studied using the medium of English, or studied English at a high level, you will also be asked to achieve the level of 6.5 overall in IELTS, with no less than 6 in each element.
There are no specific subject requirements. Many of our applicants have A Level Politics, but we do not require it, and we encourage students without it to consider politics and international relations as an exciting new possibility which may not have been available to them at school or college. We welcome applications from students taking General Studies A level, but we do not count it towards the required grades.
Mature applicants, including those on access courses, those with non-traditional qualifications and those whose educational history is uneven but who show particular promise in relevant subject areas, are considered by the admissions tutor and may well be invited for interview where they will meet a member of academic staff. Such candidates may also be asked to submit an example of recent written work.
We are keen to encourage applications from Nottinghamshire students from maintained schools and colleges who would be the first in their family to attend university or students who, because of financial considerations, may be deterred from applying. First in the Family Scholarships and Opportunity Bursaries are available as part of this initiative.
