Research Topic

Jewish and Muslim minorities’ representation in the House of Commons

The aim of the PhD is to examine whether and how religious minority background affects Jewish and Muslim representation and political behaviour of minority MPs in the House of Commons.

The research is conducted in two stages. First, it explores mobilisation of Jewish and Muslim elites, their engagement into party politics as an initial stage of a political career that gives access to other levels of politics. Second, it examines parliamentary behaviour of Jewish and Muslim MPs in the House of Commons and its difference from non-minority MPs. The empirical part of the thesis is based on the analysis of three types of data using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods: (1) politicians’ parliamentary profiles; (2) personal web-sites and in-depth interviews; (3) data on attendance, voting behaviour, parliamentary questions and the Early Day Motions.

All in all, the PhD shows the influence of religious minority background on parliamentary behaviour of Jewish and Muslim MPs, and its impact on substantive political representation of religious minorities in parliament generally.
