Research Topic

The Syr Darya River Basin: Cooperation under the Intractable Riparian Dilemma

My research is generally devoted to the problem of cooperation, when geographically adjacent states, in the absence of a central authority and shared interests, decide if, how and why to cooperate with each other on topics related to natural resource use, development or management.

A notion of the problem of cooperation in this research refers to an array of issues and concerns that influence the willingness of such states “to adjust policies to meet the demands of others” (Robert Keohane. After Hegemony…) or, in other words, to cooperate. This set of problems is primarily analysed with relation to a certain category of actors, which remain largely ignored in the literature on international cooperation: developing states.

Such focus of the research will enrich the literature with cases beyond the West-West, West-East or North-South orthodoxy and provide an account for interstate relationships within the developing world.
