The Internationalisation of Turkish Law Enforcement: A study of anti-drug trafficking

My research project focuses on the process internationalisation of Turkish law enforcement, particularly with regards to counter drug trafficking efforts. I am looking at the broader phenomenon of internationalisation of crime control by focusing on a specific country and by analyzing how and why links, interactions, collaboration and cooperation between law enforcement agencies has been developing. It would seek to find out and explain how Turkish law enforcement agencies have been participating in the global trend of internationalisation of law enforcement by focusing on the control of drug trafficking, not only because developments in this area have been at the source of increased international interactions, but also because efforts put into controlling drug trafficking still have a central role today in Turkey and worldwide.

I will use regime theory to design my theoretical framework. Because of the complexity and diversity of crime control-related matters in international relations, different theoretical approaches may be relevant to the explanation: a liberal approach about the expansion of international cooperation and institutions built on mutual interest in a context of growing interdependence and transnational flows, a realist approach about co-optation and hegemonic leadership, and a constructivist approach about transnational moral entrepreneurs and the creation and spread of global norms. I will try to test these different approaches.
