Research Topic

The Privatisation of Politics: Economic Liberalism and British Politics

My current research uses a conceptual approach to the study of political thought – an approach informed by the work of Reinhart Koselleck, Michael Freeden, and Pierre Rosanvallon – to explore the impact of economic liberalism on contemporary political ideologies. In particular, I am interested by the way in which concepts drawn from economic liberalism have been absorbed and adapted by other ideological traditions. Far from being distorted beyond all recognition (as is often assumed by analysts of ‘New’ Labour and Thatcherite Conservatism) these conceptual shifts often produce more subtle changes, modifying and/or building upon pre-existing ideological structures rather than tearing them down.
