Research Topic

Evaluating the impact of the EU accession process on recent shift in Turkish foreign policy.

This research is applying rational choice and Robert Putnam’s two level game to the Turkish foreign policy change in order to understand the factors which effect Turkey to change her foreign policy dramatically since 2002. This project seeks to explore the influence of the EU in comparison to domestic influence factors upon Turkish foreign policy behaviour by investigating and evaluating patterns of change in strategic Turkish foreign policy since 1987 when Turkey applied for EU/EC membership.

In order to examine foreign policy change, the project relies measures foreign policy by counting high level official visits, international agreements, good offices and mediation efforts , and declarations. The project examines several hard cases in order to compare the effect of the EU versus domestic politics and international factors on foreign policy change in Turkey.
