Research Topic

Segmentary Governance And Tribal Uprisings Against The North Borneo Company

The research project revisits the administration of Sabah by the British North Borneo Chartered Company (1877-1915) in order to recreate the context in which  some of the major uprisings against the Company took place. It attempts to provide an explanation of the uprisings that leans towards monocasuality, which is based an in-depth study of the segmentation of Company administration that was characteristic of the ‘informal empires’ in the 19th century.
