Exploring Young People’s Engagement with Formal Politics in the UK
The research is an investigation into the apparent lack of engagement with traditional institutions and forms of political expression – alongside a clear willingness to engage in alternative forms of political participation - in Britain on the part of young people. It will seek to analyse why young people in the UK seem detached from traditional political processes and politicians, while at the same time demonstrating an active interest and desire for involvement in political outcomes. I theorise that generational factors resulting from unique socialisation experiences during successive cohorts’ development is responsible for creating a perceived disparity between the political perspectives and demands of young people, and the older actors which dominate our political institutions and decisions.
