School of Psychology Nottingham Athena Self Assessment Committee

The Athena SWAN Charter is a scheme which recognises excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) employment in higher education.  The Charter was launched in June 2005.  Any university or research institution which is committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in SET in higher education and research can apply for membership.

The beliefs underpinning the Charter are:

  • The advancement of science, engineering and technology (SET) is fundamental to quality of life across the globe.
  • It is vitally important that women are adequately represented in what has traditionally been, and is still, a male-dominated area.
  • Science cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population, and until women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords.

More detailed information can be found at : http://www.athenaswan.org.uk/html/athena-swan/

In 2005 (renewed in 2009) the University of Nottingham was successful in achieving a bronze award under the scheme. In 2008 the School of Psychology and five other SET schools in the faculty will submit an application for a silver award demonstrating how they have been working towards the charter principles.

The School of Psychology is pleased to announce the formation of a permanent committee within the School to further the aims and objectives of the Athena charter.

  • Exchange of information from the University Women in Science Engineering and Technology (WINSET) working party of the University research Committee. This University committee chaired by (Professor Katherine Smart) was convened explicitly to oversee the implementation of the Athena charter principles in SET at Nottingham University.

The committee meets several times per year and reviews progress towards the Athena charter aims. We also discuss any related issues that staff or student members of the school have raised.

We have compiled a range of statistics including gender representation among our staff and students, promotions and committees. These can be accessed by following the links below :
