Research Summary

Cognitive Enhancement in Adolescent Brain using Mindfulness Techniques

The focus of my research is to investigate how to enhance cognition in adolescents using mindfulness techniques. Although mindfulness interventions have been shown to improve cognition in healthy adults and in patients with psychological disorders, how they enhance the healthy adolescent brain is not very well understood. The overarching goal of this research is to delineate how to enhance cognition in young adolescents and healthy young adults, using mindfulness interventions.

We are currently investigating how short term mindfulness interventions in adolescents can have an effect on higher order cognitive functions such as executive functions, working memory, attention, cognitive flexibility and creativity, and other psychological states such as perceived stress, subjective happiness, life satisfaction, and well-being.

We use electroencephalography (EEG), positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance (fMRI), neuropsychological tasks and psychological questionnaires to investigate the effects of mindfulness interventions.
