Accident Research Unit

About The Accident Research Unit

The Accident Research Unit is a University-instituted group, founded 30 years ago by Ian Howarth.  It continues to focus upon road traffic accidents, and receives most of its support from the Department for Transport.  Central themes are the effects of cognitive and perceptual defects upon driving ability and accident liability, the in-depth analysis of reports of accidents, and the relationship between visual attention and the acquisition of driving skills.

Current Research

Social deprivation and fatal accidents

Following a large study with UCL and TRL on accident mechanisms in fatal accidents we are examining the relation between particular causal factors, and indices of social and economic deprivation in the area where each accident occurred.

Accident patterns in elderly drivers

Using our long standing methods for studying samples of police accident reports by a mixture of expert interpretation and statistical analysis, we are looking at the patterns of events leading up to accidents involving elderly drivers.
