Which A-levels do we prefer?

We do not specify any particular A-level subjects for Single Honours Psychology.  However, applicants should note that Psychology at Nottingham is an academic subject and academic qualifications are usually preferred.  That said if we've made you an offer we have every confidence that your particular A level combination will equip you for a degree in Psychology.  Please note that General Studies or Critical Thinking A Levels are not included in the standard offer.

What qualifications other than A-levels are acceptable?

You will find information about commonly accepted qualifications and typical requirements on our admissions page .  Qualifications such as BTEC, GNVQ, International Baccalaureate or Highers are acceptable for most courses at Nottingham although GNVQ and BTEC students may be asked for additional A Levels to ensure adequate preparation for an academic course.  Two AS Levels are usually accepted in place of one A Level provided the AS level subjects to be taken into account are not also carried through to A level standard.

Do we reject applicants because of their school or other UCAS choices?

The University of Nottingham is not prejudiced on the basis of age, race, religion, disability, parental occupation, the school you attended or the other 5 choices on your UCAS form.  Your application will be considered on the basis of your academic record, the personal statement and the reference from your school or college.  No other information is taken into account when deciding whether or not to make you an offer.  Psychology is very popular and its courses are heavily oversubscribed, so each year a number of very able students are naturally going to be disappointed.

How much Maths do I need?

Candidates are required to have GCSE Mathematics (Grade B) or some equivalent qualification.

Can I change my mind about deferred entry?

There is an option to be considered for deferred entry at the point of application.  This option exists to allow candidates the flexibility of a year out whilst leaving institutions clear about how many applicants will arrive each year.  We are not obliged subsequently to allow deferred entry, nor are we obliged to permit candidates who originally applied for deferred entry to arrive one year earlier than expected.  If you do need to us to consider changing your prospective year of entry, it's vital that you contact us as soon as possible.  If you delay, we cannot reuse ‘your offer’ for that year and someone else will have to be rejected.

What will happen if I have a ‘near miss’?

If you narrowly miss meeting the terms of your conditional offer (e.g. achieving AAC, ABC or BBB), then we will try to get permission to accept you onto the course.  Whether we will be able to accept you or not will depend on whether Faculty as a whole has under- or over-shot in meeting target numbers.

What should I do if I'm ill at exam time?

Send a medical certificate to us ASAP and we'll take your circumstances into account if we can.  Whether we'll be able to take you or not will still depend on whether Faculty as a whole has under- or over-shot in meeting target numbers.

Will I have to conduct animal experiments?

No, but you will have to read about them.  We run a series of compulsory courses in biological psychology (neuroscience) that cannot be taught without reference to experimental studies of the brain.

Do I get to choose my halls of residence?

The University has an accommodation website

Can I apply for scholarships/bursaries?

The University has several scholarships/bursaries and information about these can be found either on the Web or by contacting the Student Support Office on 0115 951 5990.

Can I transfer to another course?

Usually yes, provided they have space and provided that you meet their entry requirements.

What are my likely employment prospects?

Nottingham graduates are in high demand by employers in a range of settings.  Graduate unemployment from Nottingham is low - statistics show that only around 3% of our graduates are unemployed a year after leaving.  The Careers Advisory Service is there to help you and they can also help with vacation placements.

Where can I find out the term and semester dates?

Term and semester dates can be found here .

Would retaking my A-levels (or GCSE maths) to improve my grades be perceived negatively on my application?

No, we would consider your application in the same way as other applicants sitting exams for the first time.
